MAC matinee: the man who knew too much

Adult Directing for the Stage Course

Using a variety of texts, participants will be taken through various professional approaches to directing plays. This dynamic and explorative course will allow you to build tools in these areas and give you confidence to ‘problem solve’ on the rehearsal room floor.
What will I learn about?
What is the role of the director in 2019?
Pre-rehearsal prep, research and approaches;
Creating the ‘world’ of the production;
To block or not to block?
Rehearsal techniques from a variety of methodologies and practitioners to help you in supporting your actors in developing characterisation and working within the world of the play;
Problem Solving;
Finding your own ‘Style’.
Who is it designed for?
Teachers of English and Drama who wish to practically explore directing;
Actors wishing to up-skill in directing;
Graduates interested in the directing process;
Youth theatre directors and theatre practitioners;
Amateur and Community theatre directors;
Anyone with an interest in the theatre making process!
The course is heavily subsidised and is only £40 for the 6 week course. If you wish to do this course and the Acting course preceding it, both courses would cost £60 in total saving you £20.
Who is the lead tutor?
Robert Marsden is Associate Professor at Staffordshire University in Acting and Directing and is Artistic Director: Theatre at the MAC. He has worked as a director across the UK and Europe in subsidised and commercial theatre since 1999. His book, Inside the Rehearsal Room will be published by Bloomsbury in 2020.
You will occasionally work with a guest tutor.
