Tuesday 9th April 2024

HAVERGAL BRIAN’S “GOTHIC" - Stoke’s Composer celebrated on film

Brian began his musical career at St James’s church at Longton as organist but became internationally known – he’s Stoke’s most famous composer. Playwright Ken Eastaugh talks about Brian and the play he wrote about him for the Victoria Theatre: Awkward Cuss - and the actors go through various scenes from the play. A documentary made with Terry Woolliscroft of the North Staffordshire Symphony Orchestra gives insights into - and showing archive of - the 1978 premier performance of Havergal Brian's giant Gothic Symphony in its fullest form at the Victoria Hall, Hanley.
