As part of the 200th Anniversary of the very first train journey with passengers from Stockton to Darlington on September 27th 1825, we chart how Stoke and North Staffordshire had to create its own railway system - since the main lines from London to the North by-passed Staffordshire. The North Staffordshire Railway (“The Knotty”) had its centre at Stoke and linked to all the mainline railways on the periphery of the County and had a character all its own.
