DISTINCTIVELY STAFFORDSHIRE - North and South,

The Creative Hub of the Midlands Caught on Film.

With the Enlightenment and first flush of the Industrial Revolution 250 years ago, Staffordshire’s greatest minds, craftspeople and industrialists led the way in creating our Modern Society. The fuse was lit HERE - with great thinkers: Josiah Wedgwood, Dr Johnson, Charles Darwin - great engineers: James Brindley, Matthew Boulton.

As the revolution gathered pace with monumental industrial initiatives for manufacture and communications in the 19th Century, so the new towns and cities developed, linked by roads, canals and railways. The North of the County was a combination ofPottery Manufacture,Coal Mining, Steelworks and Agriculture - with the thread of silk-making in the Moorlands.
The South of the County connected into the Black Country: Stafford was the centre for Salt-Making, Shoe-making and Diesel/Electric Locomotives. Furthest South was Chain-Making - creating the largest chains of the day - including the anchor chains for the Titanic and world’s largest Anchor for the Titanic.Staffordshire FilmArchive has film footage showing all these facets which make up our Distinctive Staffordshire.
